From a 70 m2 Apartment in Copenhagen to a House and a Job in Kolding
From a 70 m2 Apartment in Copenhagen to a House, Garden and Dream Job in Kolding: “Suddenly, I Was Saying ‘When’ Instead of ‘If’”
Sometimes, life takes root in a place you never expected. Just ask 39-year-old Sidsel. After 14 years in Copenhagen, she had no plans to leave. She and her young daughter, born in 2024, were going to stay and enjoy the Copenhagen lifestyle she loved so much. But a chance encounter with a property listing in December 2025 changed everything. Today, just a few months later, Sidsel calls Kolding her new home.
From ‘if’ to ‘when’
The idea of moving back towards her roots on the island of Funen and being closer to her family had started to grow after the birth of her daughter. But it was a property listing for a house in Kolding that really planted the seed.
“In the past, I’d often get carried away when visiting new places, imagining what it would be like to live there. But that feeling always disappeared as soon as I returned to Copenhagen. This time was different. After the Christmas holidays in 2025, I just couldn’t get Kolding out of my head,” Sidsel explains.
The decision really began to take shape during a visit to a friend in Sønderborg. In the middle of a conversation about houses, Sidsel suddenly realised that the way she talked about moving had changed.
“I noticed that I was unconsciously saying ‘when I move’ instead of ‘if I move’. That was when I knew I’d actually made up my mind.”
More room to live, without compromising
What really attracted Sidsel to Kolding was the combination of affordable housing, close family ties and everything the city has to offer. Her brother and sister-in-law have lived in Kolding since 2012, and through them she knew that the city had everything a family with young children could need.
Moving from a 70-square-metre cooperative apartment in Copenhagen to a 150-square-metre house in Kolding has given Sidsel and her daughter the space and freedom they had been dreaming of.
“We have so much more space now. Everything feels less cramped, and my daughter has plenty of room to run around,” says Sidsel.
She also points out that moving to Kolding doesn’t mean having to give up culture or city life.
“There might not be quite as many options in every category as there are in Copenhagen, but the opportunities are all here. Kolding has everything.”
Everything fell into place
Although Sidsel knew that the Triangle Region is a thriving business area with many companies, she hadn’t dared to hope that finding a job would be quite so easy. But everything fell into place.
On 31 March, she moved into her new house, and just a week later, on 7 April, she started her new job as an HR Business Partner at Comwell in Kolding.
“Moving has taken a lot of hard work, but thanks to the incredible support from my family and the wonderfully flexible and understanding welcome I’ve received from my new workplace at Comwell, everything has just felt right from start to finish,” she explains.
A city waiting to be explored
Sidsel and her daughter have already discovered their first favourite spot in Kolding. Legeparken, the city’s popular playground and park, has been a huge hit.
“A place like this would be absolutely packed with people in Copenhagen. Here, it’s simply a fantastic, easily accessible place where you can enjoy some freedom and space,” she says enthusiastically.
The next step is to get to know the rest of the city as summer arrives in Kolding. Living close to Marienlund Forest, Sidsel is looking forward to exploring the natural surroundings, restaurants and shops – and, not least, building an even stronger local network.
Her advice to anyone considering swapping big-city life for Kolding is clear:
“You get an incredible amount of house and space for your money, beautiful natural surroundings, exciting events and an amazingly warm welcome.”
