Evangelos from Athens found a balanced life
When environmental engineer Evangelos from Greece moved to Kolding two years ago with his wife and their young daughter, he honestly didn’t know much about the city. He had come across an interesting job posting at Gram Equipment on LinkedIn, and it marked the beginning of a new life in Denmark.
“I had previously lived in Copenhagen for a year as a visiting researcher at DTU. During that time, I got to know a little about Danish culture, and I really liked it,” Evangelos explains.
When the opportunity at Gram Equipment came along, it seemed like the perfect time to make the move.
His first impression of Kolding was positive from the very beginning:
“I still remember driving around to explore the city and the surrounding area. Kolding immediately struck me as a place where we could build a good family life. The city combines nature, history and urban life in a harmonious way,” he says with a smile.
Finding a place to live was easy
Moving from Greece to Denmark naturally came with its challenges, but many things turned out to be easier than the family had expected.
“Gram Equipment helped us enormously. They arranged for us to stay in a furnished apartment for the first month, giving us the time and peace of mind to find our own home. And as it turned out, finding a good place to live in Kolding wasn’t that difficult,” Evangelos says.
Today, the family has settled in well. He has found his colleagues, neighbours and friends to be very supportive throughout the process.
“Before moving here, I had heard that Danes could be a little reserved, but that hasn’t been my experience at all. Quite the opposite! People in Kolding are open, warm and very helpful. I’ve never been turned down when I’ve asked for help. And when I go for a walk, people greet each other,” he says.
Legeparken and the fjord
One of the things Evangelos appreciates most is how easy it is to make everyday life work.
“It’s convenient to manage everyday life here. It gives us more energy for both family and work. I think it’s a very Danish thing to enjoy everyday life and not just the holidays,” he says.
The family enjoys spending their free time outdoors in and around Kolding, particularly at Legeparken and in the designated shelter areas, which Evangelos describes as a “fantastic amenity”. He enjoys windsurfing, winter swimming and making the most of the many free activities and events available in the city.
Kolding just felt right
When asked why he chose Kolding in particular, he comes back to what ultimately made the difference:
“When I visited different towns in the area, Kolding was the one that felt right. It’s difficult to explain – it was simply a feeling. Kolding has a special atmosphere. A positive energy. And the city is safe, offers plenty of activities for children, has a strong international community and everything you need to build a good family life.”
“Kolding just felt right – right from the start.”
