An Inexplicable Feeling of Home
Imagine packing your entire life into a couple of suitcases, leaving Iceland behind and moving to a city you have no real connection to.
That’s exactly what Stefania and Egill did in June 2025, when they moved with their two children. And it all began with a gut feeling they couldn’t quite explain.
They wanted to try something new
After a wonderful farm holiday in Denmark in 2024, the family felt ready for a new adventure. They wanted to try something different.
Their only requirement was to live close to Billund Airport, making it easy to travel back to Iceland to visit family and friends.
They drove around exploring towns such as Vejle, Horsens and Silkeborg, and had only planned to spend a single night at a hotel in Kolding.
But as they drove down Lyshøj Allé, something magical happened.
“Completely independently of each other, we both had this feeling that we had come home. It just felt right,” the couple says
Finding a Job Takes Patience
Today, both Stefania and Egill work in Kolding and are part of the local community. But finding their feet professionally hasn’t always been easy.
Stefania has a degree in sports and health sciences as well as management experience from Iceland, but she quickly discovered that finding your way into the Danish job market can be challenging when you’re new to the country.
“You have to deal with a lot of rejections before you finally get that yes,” she says.
Today, she works at a care home in Kolding, where she has been warmly welcomed by her colleagues and is picking up Danish remarkably quickly.
Egill is a software developer and mainly works with Icelandic companies. He also has a desk at MindTheMedia in Kolding, giving him the chance to be part of a Danish workplace and connect with local colleagues.
What Makes Kolding Special
Stefania and Egill especially appreciate how clean, peaceful and welcoming Kolding feels. They love the natural surroundings around Strandhuse and Kolding Fjord.
And they have fallen so much in love with Koldinghus that they have already decided that if they ever get married, that’s where it has to be!
Their children, aged 11 and 18, have received a wonderful welcome at their schools. They now speak fluent Danish and are thriving in their new surroundings.
Their advice to anyone thinking about making the move to Kolding is simple:
“Just do it! Why not?”
