Bjarne Found His Dream Job in Kolding

If a new job – or simply a job – is on your wish list, Kolding and the surrounding area are well worth exploring. With so many businesses and workplaces in the area, there are plenty of job opportunities to choose from.

According to Statistics Denmark, there were 62,511 jobs across Kolding Municipality towards the end of 2023 (the latest available figures). This highlights Kolding’s thriving business community, where new job opportunities regularly arise.

And that’s great news for anyone looking to land their dream job.

Trading Sønderborg for Kolding

One person who has found happiness through a new job in Kolding is Bjarne Nielsen.

Just a few years ago, he would never have imagined leaving Southern Jutland to start a new chapter in Kolding. But that’s exactly what he did in February 2025.

Bjarne was born and raised in Ulkebøl, near Sønderborg, and has lived in the area for almost his entire life. His three grown-up children also live in and around Sønderborg.

But then life took an unexpected turn, prompting him to broaden his search for a new job. And that search eventually led him to Kolding.

“Unfortunately, I found myself unemployed at a rather difficult age. The company I worked for went bankrupt, and I struggled to find a new job in Sønderborg. But I had worked closely with GLS in my previous job, so one day I asked my contact at GLS headquarters in Kolding whether they might have a position for me. Luckily, they did,” Bjarne explains.

Kolding is a great place to be based

Today, Bjarne works in the export department, preparing customs declarations for parcels being shipped to Norway. And he couldn’t be happier with his job at GLS.

“I’ve never worked for a company that takes such good care of its employees. You really get the sense that employee wellbeing matters here, and that religion, skin colour and age simply don’t matter. Everyone has something to contribute, and that creates a really welcoming working environment,” Bjarne says with a big smile.

He joined the Kolding office in 2021 and initially commuted every day between his home in Sønderborg and his workplace in Kolding.

“I did that for four years, but driving that far every day takes its toll. So I decided to start looking for an apartment in Kolding.”

He found one in a newly built high-rise building, with views of Marina Syd from his balcony. And he has had no reservations about settling down in a different part of Denmark.

“It hasn’t been a problem at all. My three children all live in Sønderborg anyway, so I can visit them all at the same time. And my friends are scattered across Denmark. In that sense, Kolding is a great central location, right in the heart of the country,” Bjarne says.
